28 years. No textbook covers what I actually learned.

I started in 1998, just after university. Since then — boardrooms, investment tables, closed-door sessions with the people who actually move capital, across every continent.

What I know now that I wish I had known then:
👉 Real authority is not studied. It is earned — not in classrooms, but in boardrooms, at negotiation tables, in moments where the wrong call had real consequences.
👉 The gap between knowledge and judgment is expensive. I have watched brilliant people lose decades learning this the hard way.
👉 Capital flows to conviction with credentials. Neither is enough on its own.
Somewhere along the way, I learnt never to be surprised. By anything.
👉 What matters most is never the strategy on the slide. It is the quality of the leaders in the room — their dignity, their consistency, their authenticity under pressure. The rest is noise.
👉 I am still amazed, every time, to see the broken eggs down the road. The ones who cut corners. The ones who confused position with character. They always surface eventually.

The most valuable lessons? They never came with a certificate.

On April 9th, I joined as a speaker to the opening conference of the İstanbul İkiz Dönüşüm Platformu Platform at MEXT Technology Centre — for a panel on energy efficiency in industry, moderated by Prof. Levent Kurnaz.

A few things stood out from the conversation:

Energy is no longer a cost-centre topic. It sits at the core of investment thesis and competitive advantage — and the boards that haven’t made that transition yet are carrying a risk that isn’t fully priced in their valuations, but will be.

Companies that can’t measure, report, and manage their energy consumption are already losing access to international capital and supply chains. This is today’s reality, not a future risk.

And the window to act is narrowing. The scaling gap — the lack of structured growth capital for this transition — is the real bottleneck. Not the technology. Not the will.
