The new normal is not waiting for the dust to settle. The dust is not settling. Position for advantage now.

One slide at the EBRD Nominee Director Board Practice Conference in London captured the decade we are operating in. Fordham Global Foresight’s data shows that global risk events rose from 1,122 in 2010 to 3,247 in 2024, nearly tripling:
→ 4x increase in cyber attacks
→ 10x increase in trade disputes
→ 2x increase in conflict
→ 2x increase in civil unrest

The acceleration started well before today’s headlines. This is a structural shift, not a temporary shock.
That changes the job of the board. Risk is no longer an item on the agenda. It is the environment the whole agenda sits in. Boards that wait for clarity will be governing yesterday’s company. Boards that treat volatility as the starting condition will decide where competitive advantage is built.

It also changes how companies should be capitalised. Equity builds the business. Debt sustains it. When capital stacks are built for stability in an era of volatility, companies lose the ability to absorb shocks and still invest through them.

The energy transition, and the companies scaling it, need more patient equity. Not more leverage.
For the boards I sit with and the companies I back, the question is:
Is your board spending its time protecting the downside, or positioning for the upside?

Day 4 of NYC Climate Week is over.

I had a full day of meetings, roundtables and many interesting gatherings. But I want to highlight one..

Since Monday I have joined invite-only roundtables, attended conferences and receptions, and spoken with investors, policymakers and corporate leaders from New York to Ankara.

The events ranged from the Atlantic Councilil’s gathering at Bank of America Tower and the HSBC Climate Week Roundtable to McKinsey & Company’s “The New Energy Equation,” The The Economist Live: Geopolitics, and the The Wall Street Journal’s session on Economic Security and Global Markets.

On Monday evening, I was at the 19th Türkiye Investment Conference reception at the New York Public Library. On Wednesday morning, I joined the Fin-Erth Awards Uplift Breakfast, held in partnership with the MSCI Institute, as Energy Shift Capitall is an official Nominating Partner of the 2026/27 Fin-Erth Awards.

The more rooms I enter, the clearer it becomes that macroeconomics, geopolitics and capital allocation are converging toward three priorities: resilience, independence and security.

The energy transition is no longer only a climate agenda. It is now also an agenda for economic security and sovereignty. Capital is following that shift, and the investors who recognise it early will define the next decade of long-term value creation.

With COP31 in Antalya only weeks away, and after Monday’s US–Türkiye conversation at the Atlantic Council, it is clear Türkiye sits right at this intersection. Energy Shift Capital is building the bridge.
